Oplandske Spritfabrik

The Gjøvik district is the key area for potato processing in Norway, having been so ever since the early 19th century.  Names like Strand and Holmen harbour a long tradition of distilling in this area.

The demand for processing of potato spirit led to a collaboration of the main distilleries, and A/S Oplandske Spritfabrik was established in Stenersgaten, Christiania in 1872.  The stills supplied the company with crude alcohol, which then underwent rectification.  The company produced and sold aquavits, liqueurs and punch from their own recipes.

In common with the other distilleries, the State Wine Monopoly bought out the company in 1925.  Business operations in Stenersgaten, however, continued for many years after 1925.  The newly established monopoly had no premises and was dependent on the continuation of the existing activities.

Production continued at the same premises up to 1933, when the State Wine Monopoly’s new premises were completed at Hasle, near Økern.
